At the beginning of the automobile age, in a car crazy southern California, roadways were dotted with eye-catching beacons for travelers. Scattered among the Western architectural landscape were diners shaped like chili-bowls, pigs, and coffee pots - a trend that later spread across the United States. Taking their inspiration less form professional architects and more from the business owners who knew the value of catching the attention of someone in a moving car, these structures combined whimsy, practicality, and visual appeal. 

A reaction to all this by a visiting Briton in the 1930s goes like this; "If, when you went shopping, yo found you could buy cakes in a windmill, ice cream in a gigantic cream-can, flowers in a huge flowerpot, you might begin to wonder whether you had not stepped through a looking glass or taken a toss down a rabbit burrow and could expect Mad Hatter of White Queen to appear round the next corner. But there would be nothing unreal about it if you were in Hollywood, Southern California, for shops of that kind are to be seen in all the shopping districts there."
